How to Use Tangie Laundry Detergent Concentrate

The laundry detergent bar MUST be dissolved in water first! But no real effort is required. Just drop the bar into water and let it dissolve overnight.

Use regular tap water. No hot water, no stirring or mixing required.

Each detergent bar dissolves to make ONE GALLON of liquid laundry soap giving you 128+ loads of laundry, depending on your laundry load size and stink. That is less than $0.20 per load!

If you can handle dissolving sugar in water, you can make this refillable laundry liquid. Tangie Laundry is a concentrated paste-to-liquid formulation you dissolve at home by placing the bar (or a piece of the bar) into a container of your choice and fill that container with water. That’s all it takes.

CUSTOMIZE THE AMOUNT OF REFILLABLE LAUNDRY DETERGENT YOU MAKE:

You do NOT need to dissolve the entire bar of Tangie Laundry Concentrate all at one time. The entire laundry bar dissolves to make one gallon of liquid laundry soap. That might be too much to lift or even fit in the container you are starting with.

Simply cut the laundry bar into 4 equal parts and each piece can be dissolved into 32 ounces of water. TIP: 1 Liter (32 ounces) of liquid laundry detergent is a much easier amount to lift and pour!

Store the unused pieces in a container to keep them dry. Shelf life for the undissolved pieces is > 2 years. After you have dissolved the laundry concentrate, we recommend you use the liquid laundry soap within 6 months.

The best is to reuse your old laundry jug once it is empty. Plastic laundry jugs are strong and usually have a handle with a build in measuring cap.

What ingredients we don’t use and why

SYNTHETIC FRAGRANCES are exempt from labeling requirements and regarded as “trade secrets”. There is no way to determine what the individual ingredients are and may include phthalates. These have been linked with aggravation of asthma, headaches, allergic reactions and possible long term central nervous system disorders.
FORMALDEHYDE. Sadly, the same chemical used to preserve a body when it dies is also an additive in many detergents like dishwashing and laundry products. The EPA and CDC say it is a probable carcinogen, even with even at low level exposure.
AMMONIA. May cause respiratory irritation and may agitate asthma symptoms. Another ingredient that can lead to poor indoor air quality. When combined with bleach, it will form a highly poisonous gas.
OPTICAL BRIGHTENERS. Using chemical fluorescent blue dyes, optical brighteners are added to laundry detergents to make fabric appear brighter and whiter. It is merely an optical illusion. Since wearing clothes keeps your skin in constant contact with this chemical dye, it can harmful to your skin and lungs.
SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE (SLS)/SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE (SLES) There are nearly 16,000 studies in the PubMed science library about the toxicity of this chemical that can be found on the SLS page on Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) website. It is present in nearly all shampoos, scalp treatments, hair color and bleaching agents, toothpastes, body washes and cleansers, make-up foundations, liquid hand soaps, and laundry detergents. Although SLS originates from coconuts, the chemical is anything but natural.
1,4-DIOXANE Any discussion of SLS/SLES must include a discussion of 1,4 dioxane because the manufacturing process of SLS/SLES results in its being contaminated with 1,4 dioxane—a known carcinogen. (NOT to be confused with Dioxin)
PROPYLENE GLYCOL is Primarily used as a solvent and an aid to absorption through the skin. The main concerns are that this material may be a primary skin irritant and there are possible links to liver abnormalities and kidney damage.
TRICLOSAN Primarily added to cosmetics as an anti-bacterial agent. It belongs to a class of chemicals known as chlorophenols and is suspected of causing cancer in humans.
PHOSPHATES Phosphorous is like a fertilizer in our water system. It increases algae and aquatic weed growth, the oxygen needed for healthy fish and aquatic life is depleted.

This is my new favorite detergent! I love how waste free it is, and it does an amazing job on my laundry! I was so skeptical at first, especially with how little you have to use, but I just trusted in the product, and used the recommended amount, and it’s done an amazing job! I absolutely love your laundry soap. Every aspect is thought through, (no)packaging and all, and it works so well! I tried all kinds of alternative, more eco friendly detergents before, but I was not really happy with either of them. I used to buy Zum laundry soap for years, it works and smells great, but it’s in that plastic bottle… I love the idea of laundry sheets and tried different kinds until I realized that they don’t wash well and also contain questionable ingredients. So frustrating. The Tangie soap is the answer for sure. It’s terrific! Thank you!

I’ve used several bars of this soap in the past couple of years and really love it! I love how gentle it is and it really does make my laundry feel clean – even though I think I might use less than the recommended amount (the bottle I use for laundry is quite small so I cut up the block into tiny pieces – one bar makes 10 bottles for me). I don’t care to measure so I eyeball it and have been having good luck with it :) Cutting it up and mixing the bottle is a therapeutic experience, like a methodical morning coffee. As for the packaging, I reuse the paper slips to write notes and keep my other naked soap bars from melting into each other, just in case anyone needs any ideas.

I have bought dozens of bars of this laundry soap! I have used it for years on all our washing (including dog beds, and inning shoes, silk items) with great results. I’m a real zero waste and sustainable person —2 years plus on average producing 1 bag of trash— and I’m very disappointed in the shipping method.

I ordered 1 item, to experiment with, and selected the no packaging option. And, to make sure i hit the point home, I put in the shipping notes “please ship in as little packaging as possible”.

The Laundry Bar came double wrapped (!!), once in white paper, then in brown. Totally unnecessary and not “Zero Waste”!

In addition, they sent a “Free” (Nothing is FREE, everything has a cost) sample of concentrated hand soap, that I did not ask for and will not use, wrapped in printed paper, as well as an additional bar of boxed laundry soap to “Thank me for caring”…..WTF? Caring would have been if they sent me the bar, with nothing else, and at MAX, wrapped it in brown paper.

So frustrated. Very unnecessary.

Plus, they have 2 websites… how confusing for the same company, selling the same things?!

  HI Marty. Thank you for taking time to leave a review. Let me address your concerns the best I can. Our apologies that you did not care for the free sample and extra full size bar of free laundry concentrate you received in your order. If you are not going to use them, please pay them forward to a friend who would like to try natural products.
  
  The free sample of hand wash is something we like to include when a Laundry Concentrate is order. It is the best way we know to use up the unsellable bits of hand wash leftover from the production process. We donate most of the ‘scraps’ to local non-profits and give it away to our wholesale customers then the rest we divide up into small .25 ounce samples which we put in orders for people to get to make one cup of liquid hand wash. Since the hand wash concentrate has to be dissolved like the laundry concentrate, we made the assumption that customers who order the laundry concentrate would also appreciate trying a free sample of the hand wash concentrate before making the investment in a full-size bar.
  
  Today, after receiving your email about your review, I spoke with our warehouse staff and they will no longer be wrapping package-free bars in the extra bit of kraft paper.
  
  Sadly, this is a point that goes both ways with customers. We started wrapping our concentrate bars in the extra layer of kraft paper as a result of customer feedback like yours. In the past, when shipping the bars only wrapped in the thin white paper, a few customers complained that when the concentrate bars arrived, a section of the bar was smushed in transit and some of the soap stuck to the inside of the paper envelope, and they didn’t appreciate that. So, we took their feedback into consideration and began wrapping the package-free bars in an extra layer of reused kraft paper.
  
  As you can see, it is hard to please everyone. We do our best to keep packaging to a minimum and plastic free while trying to balance how aggressive the packages are handled in transit by the shipping carriers. By the way, the thin white paper the bars and samples are wrapped in are actually the bottom half of the packing slips that we cut off and reuse instead of printing full page packing slips. We tried to get rid of using packing slips, but after surveying our customers and some non-customers, more than 50% of those asked responded saying they want a packing slip in an order.
  
  As for the two websites Tangie LLC has, that was a choice we made last year when deciding to improve the online customer experience. Since our first website, wastefreeproducts.com was already well established with organic traffic, it would not be beneficial to turn it off or forward it to a the URL, Tangieco.com. So, at the advice of people with much more knowledge than me on these types of business scenarios, it was determined the best thing to do was to start a new website designed to showcase the Tangie line of products. It was not an easy decision for me, and it was an expensive choice, yet a choice that was necessary in growing my business to meet the needs of Tangie customers. I love this laundry soap. I have not used commercial laundry soap in many years and this is by far the best product I have used – including the laundry soap I used to make. I use the recommended amount even though it doesn’t seem like enough and have lovely clean clothes.

I have been using this laundry paste for years and it still amazes me how small of an amount you need for a load of laundry. And I have never had any icky gasket funk or odor like I did with every major brand I used in my front loading washer.

After I dissolve the laundry bar with water, how long is the shelf life?

After the laundry paste is dissolved, we recommend you use it within 6 months, with the caveat that water is the breeding ground for mold. Of course, mold has a hard time growing on soap but if you feel you won’t be using up the dissolved laundry concentrate within 6 months, cut the bar in half and make less.

Is this laundry soap safe for washing cloth diapers?

Many of our customers have reported back to us with great results using our laundry detergent with their cloth diapers.

The only ‘complaints’ we have received on the cloth diapering is the laundry detergent alone does not remove all the stains. Some were not concerned overly concerned about the stains but those who were we sent a Tangie stain remover bar sample to them, and they reported our stain remover bar takes out all the unfavorable marks that get left behind on cloth diapers, bibs or clothes on those extra messy days and took care of those baby stains better than using the laundry detergent alone.

Others also reported needing to also soak the cloth diapers in an oxygen bleach periodically to remove excess ammonia smell or when too much diaper rash cream was used.

Because one-ounce is the recommended for large/extra dirty load, we recommend using 1-ounce for each load of cloth diapers.

What is the shelf life for the bar of Laundry Concentrate?

The bar has a long shelf life of 3+ years. The outside of the bar will develop soap ash which will not look pretty but it is completely safe and will not reduce the efficacy of the soap. We recommend you store the bar in a dry location.

Will the laundry soap work if I use cold water to wash my clothes?

We recommend cold/cool washes. How laundry gets done is a personally preference but the end result is that soap is the carrier to remove dirt and bacteria and the water washes it all away. Load size should always be considered. Do not overstuff. The water needs to be able to have enough space to wash the clothes and adequate room to rinse away the dirt. Using cold water works great with Tangie laundry concentrate. Thank you for asking!

I have an old top load washer with an agitator. Do I need to use more soap in the older machines?

Not really. It depends on how much clothes you load in at one time. If the machine fills the tub all the way with water, you may want to start with one ounce of dissolved Laundry Concentrate and see how it goes for you.

Will I get an oil build up on my clothes or in my washing machine from using your natural laundry soap?

It has been documented in blogs that homemade laundry soap can damage clothes and leave a build-up in washing machines. Tangie Laundry Concentrate doesn’t fit the description of the homemade type soaps. Our formula uses yucca root powder and soap nuts liquid in the base. which are natural saponins, or natural detergents. Oil build up has not been reported to us by users. We’ve had reports from some front load machine users that the smell they used to have in their machine using traditional liquid laundry detergent went away after using Tangie Laundry. Not sure why that is but we were happy to hear it and share their experience.

Can the Laundry Concentrate be used to clean makeup brushes?

Yes and it works great! It cleans effectively and rinses easily. Actually, Tangie Hand Wash Concentrate also works well to clean make-up brushes. Simply rinse the brushes out by hand, apply some soap and rub the bristles between your fingers, the rinse well. Just like washing your hands, scrub for at least 20- 30 seconds. Depending on the makeup level on the brushes, you may need to wash and rinse two times.

Is the Laundry Concentrate hypoallergenic? My mom is super allergic to stuff. We found this on a search for hypoallergenic laundry. Just checking as she is nervous.

How much liquid laundry soap do you use in a load?

Half an ounce to 1 oz depending on load size and dirt level. Try one half ounce for clothes that are not super dirty or stinky. Adjust up from there per your needs and load size.

What are your recommended guidelines to use your laundry soap to handwash clothes?

Depending on how many items you wash at one time by hand, I would start with 1/4 ounce of Laundry Concentrate Bar after you dissolve it.

Can I use your laundry soap in my high effeciency washing machine?

Yes, it is great for HE because it is a very low sudsings formula.

Can I use this in a machine that auto-fills detergent?

Your machine will ask what the concentration level is. Once you dissolve the Tangie Laundry Concentrate it is a 3x concentrate for you machine.

What kind of water should I use to dissolve the laundry detergent paste?

Tap water is fine unless you have really heavy iron well water. Then filtered water is recommended.

I'm going on a road trip and was wondering if your soaps are safe to use in the wild? I will likely be camping in places with no septic system.

Our soaps are made with natural ingredients and are biodegradable. However , it is always recommended, for all soaps, to be used and disposed of at least 200 feet away of any body of water.

Do you happen to have a set of recommended guidelines if I wanted to use your laundry soap to handwash clothes?

Yes! Our zero waste laundry detergent works great for hand washing because it is a low suds formula. It cleans and rinses easily. Start with < ¼ ounce of liquid soap and change the amount based on how many items you are washing together.

How long does the Laundry Concentrate take to dissolve?

Sometimes you need to do laundry right away. We get it! Our zero waste laundry detergent is a concentrated paste and takes a several hours for one bar to completely dissolve. If you need soap sooner, cut the bar into 16 pieces and dissolve one piece in glass with 8 ounces of warm water. Stir it around a few times and it will be dissolved in about an hour.
