Shaving removes the lipid layer of our skin, the layer responsible for keeping moisture locked in the skin. Once removed, skin can dry out and become prone to outside irritation and chemicals. Because I have sensitive skin, I needed a shave bar focused on ingredients to protect and heal my skin from the inherent issues caused by shaving.

What Ingredients We Don’t Use and Why

Synthetic Fragrances
Synthetic fragrances are often excluded from labeling requirements and considered trade secrets. The term “fragrance” can encompass a wide range of chemicals, some of which may be harmful. This lack of transparency makes it impossible to identify individual ingredients, which may include phthalates. These substances have been linked to asthma aggravation, headaches, allergic reactions, and potential long-term central nervous system disorders.

Triethanolamine (TEA)
TEA is commonly found in personal care products like shaving creams and gels. While TEA itself is not inherently harmful, its presence in high concentrations or contamination with other substances can pose health risks. TEA can form nitrosamines—carcinogenic compounds—when it reacts with nitrosating agents, such as sodium nitrite. Prolonged exposure to nitrosamines is associated with an increased risk of cancer, particularly bladder cancer. Additionally, high concentrations of TEA can irritate the skin and eyes, leading to redness, itching, and burning sensations.

Diethanolamine (DEA)
Like TEA, DEA is commonly used in shaving products. It can pose health risks if present in high concentrations or contaminated. Animal studies have indicated that high levels of DEA may cause liver and kidney damage. While considered safe in low concentrations, prolonged exposure to high levels of DEA could increase the risk of liver and kidney issues.

Parabens
Parabens are widely used as preservatives in cosmetics. Some studies suggest they may disrupt hormonal functions and have been found in breast cancer tissue. It’s advisable to avoid deodorants containing parabens, especially since they are applied near the breast area daily.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)
SLS and SLES are surfactants commonly used to create lather in personal care products. Research shows that these chemicals can irritate the skin, especially for sensitive individuals, leading to dryness and flakiness. The manufacturing process of SLS/SLES often results in contamination with 1,4-dioxane, a known carcinogen.

Propylene Glycol
Primarily used as a solvent and skin absorption aid, propylene glycol may cause skin irritation and has possible links to liver abnormalities and kidney damage.

Triclosan
Added as an antibacterial agent, triclosan belongs to a class of chemicals known as chlorophenols and is suspected of causing cancer in humans.

Phosphates
Phosphates act like fertilizers in water systems, promoting excessive algae growth and depleting oxygen levels necessary for aquatic life.

Formaldehyde-Releasing Preservatives
These preservatives release formaldehyde, a carcinogenic substance, over time. Examples include DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, and diazolidinyl urea.
