Shaving removes the lipid layer of our skin, the layer responsible for keeping moisture locked in the skin. Once removed, skin can dry out and become prone to outside irritation and chemicals. Because I have sensitive skin, I needed a shave bar focused on ingredients to protect and heal my skin from the inherent issues caused by shaving.

What ingredients we don’t use and why

SYNTHETIC FRAGRANCES are exempt from labeling requirements and regarded as trade secrets. The word ‘fragrance’ in an ingredient list is a catch-all term that can include a wide range of chemicals, some of which may be harmful. There is no way to determine what the individual ingredients are and may include phthalates. These have been linked with aggravation of asthma, headaches, allergic reactions and possible long term central nervous system disorders.
TEA, or Triethanolamine. A commonly used ingredient in many personal care products, including shaving creams and gels. While TEA itself is not inherently harmful, its use in personal care products can potentially pose health risks if it is present in high concentrations or if it is contaminated with other harmful substances. One potential risk associated with TEA is its potential to form nitrosamines, which are carcinogenic compounds. Nitrosamines can form when TEA reacts with other ingredients in the presence of nitro sating agents, such as sodium nitrite. High levels of exposure to nitrosamines have been linked to an increased risk of cancer, particularly bladder cancer. TEA can also be irritating to the skin and eyes. When used in high concentrations, it can cause redness, itching, and burning sensations on the skin. Prolonged or repeated exposure to TEA may also lead to dryness, flakiness, and cracking of the skin.
DEA, or diethanolamine, is another ingredient commonly used in shaving creams and gels. Like TEA, DEA can also pose potential health risks if it is present in high concentrations or if it is contaminated with other harmful substances. DEA has also been linked to potential risks to the liver and kidneys. In animal studies, exposure to high levels of DEA has been shown to cause liver and kidney damage. While the risk to human health is still being studied, prolonged exposure to high levels of DEA may increase the risk of liver and kidney problems. Overall, while DEA is considered safe when used in low concentrations, its presence in high concentrations or in combination with other harmful substances can potentially pose risks to human health.
PARABENS Found in many cosmetics as a preservative. Some studies suggest that parabens may disrupt hormonal function and have been found in breast cancer tissue. Be sure to avoid deodorant containing parabens since it’s applied close to the breast area, every day for many, many y
SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE (SLS)/SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE (SLES) There are nearly 16,000 studies in the PubMed science library about the toxicity of this chemical that can be found on the SLS page on Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) website. This is a surfactant that is commonly used in personal care products to create a lather. SLS can be irritating to the skin, particularly for those with sensitive skin, and can cause dryness and flakiness.
1,4-DIOXANE Any discussion of SLS/SLES must include a discussion of 1,4 dioxane because the manufacturing process of SLS/SLES results in its being contaminated with 1,4 dioxane—a known carcinogen. (NOT to be confused with Dioxin)
PROPYLENE GLYCOL is primarily used as a solvent and an aid to absorption through the skin. The main concerns are that this material may be a primary skin irritant and there are possible links to liver abnormalities and kidney damage.
TRICLOSAN Primarily added to cosmetics as an anti-bacterial agent. It belongs to a class of chemicals known as chlorophenols and is suspected of causing cancer in humans.
PHOSPHATES Phosphorous is like a fertilizer in our water system. It increases algae and aquatic weed growth, the oxygen needed for healthy fish and aquatic life is depleted.
FORMALDEHYDE-releasing preservatives: These are preservatives that release formaldehyde, a carcinogenic substance, over time. Examples of these preservatives include DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, and diazolidinyl urea.

It is always a good idea to read the labels of personal care products and to use them as directed to minimize your exposure to potentially harmful ingredients.

I have been using this shaving soap for a month now. It definitely does the job though it works much better with a brush, than with hands in my opinion. Very happy to have a plastic-free alternative to shaving cream.
